So I'm at a bar last night with my roommate and a couple other friends. This is a rather eclectic place. On one side, you'll find a painting valued at $800. On the other, a photo booth. And in the middle, there's an old school Ms. Pacman game - you know, the kind where you sit down to play and there are two joysticks on opposite sides of the machine (mind you, I played one time and was just one level short of setting the high score). So anyway, next to where we're sitting, there's a jukebox and some people keep adding songs to the playlist. We're just hanging out, minding our own business, when Video Killed the Radio Star comes on by The Buggles. As a big fan of electronic music, especially of the 20-30 year-old variety, I react immediately upon hearing the first few notes. Noticing my creepy grin, a friend asks me who did the song. I say, "This is Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. My first thought is 1980, but I'm gonna have to go with 1979 actually. Aaaand I'm pretty sure it was the first video ever played on MTV."
So there's a guy at the jukebox and he goes, "Yep, it was. But it was in 1983."
"Really?" I say, whirling around in contempt and unabashed disgust. "I think the song came out a while before it ever aired on MTV. And 1983 seems a bit late."
"No man, trust me," he replies. "Trust a guy much older than you to know this stuff. It was released and the video aired in '83."
I argue with him a bit, but the entire time, I have a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach that I only get when all is not right with the world. And when people get information wrong, all is not right.
I decide to temporarily accept his response and check the Internet when I get home. After all, I've been wrong before. It's possible I got my dates mixed up. You never know. So I checked.
And all I have to say is THAT'S RIGHT.
The song DID come out in 1979. And it aired on the first day MTV started programming, which was August 1st, 1981. So not only was I right in my recollection about the original song release year, but he was also completely wrong about the MTV date.
Guess what dude...I wasn't even born yet. And you got owned.

By the way, if anyone can identify this erroneous man whose name I don't know at the bar I can't recall, please point him to this blog so that he can feel the shame that he deserves. Thank you.
